Getting Started with GIS

There is still time to register for the LITA web course "Getting Started with GIS." This asynchronous, self-paced course beings Monday, February 11 and concludes on March 4.

The course will consist of a combination of recorded lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on tutorials. Created specifically for library staff, this course will provide students with an introduction to the both online and desktop GIS currently being used by library administrators, librarians, library support staff and library users.

Participants will learn firsthand how to create online maps; how to properly use maps in library webpages; how to embed GIS technology into library projects (and the benefits of it!); and how to enjoy GIS and mapping technologies in personal endeavors.  Students will be exposed to many online resources that are currently being used by public, academic and special libraries across North America.  No previous mapping or GIS experience is necessary.

Some of the online applications covered include:

• Google Maps and Google Earth
• ArcGIS.com
• ArcGIS and free open source GIS software
